Musical frontman Shaun Ryder revealed the health reason he had to keep his sunglasses on in the dark during the first episode in the new series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here. The Happy Mondays singer was seen sporting his shades even as night fell in camp. But he explained it wasn’t for aesthetic reasons.
This latest season of I’m A Celeb differs from previous iterations, with a new setting of South Africa, rather than Australia.
Episodes are also pre-recorded meaning there is no public vote.
Shaun is joined by other famous faces including TV star Carol Vorderman, boxer Amir Khan, Coronation Street actress Helen Flanagan and supermodel Janice Dickinson.
In its opening episode Shaun could be heard telling his co-stars that he wasn’t wearing sunglasses just for the sake of it.

He said: “I’m not a tw** wearing sunglasses when it’s dark. I’ve got no eyelashes, so all the sh** gets in my eyes.”
Boxing champion Amir was seen reassuring Shaun, 60, with a pat on the shoulder, saying: “Oh, don’t worry!” However, Carol was shocked and asked: “What?”
Shaun had previously explained why he lost all his body hair during interviews back in 2019.
He opened up to Good Morning Britain and Radio X about being diagnosed with unexplained alopecia after hip surgery.
As a result the Happy Mondays legend said he had no eyelashes, no fingernails and no hair.
At the time he said: “I’ve just had a new hip, and at the same time all my body hair decides to fall out.
“We don’t really know… Because I have an underactive thyroid that makes you put on weight and slow down, they thought it might have been linked to that or the fact I don’t produce testosterone anymore.
“They thought it might be linked to that. Now it doesn’t look like that.

It is not the first time Shaun’s health has been in the public eye. In 2020 he told The Sun about a non-cancerous cyst he had in his testicle.
“This non-malignant growth in my testicle is pressing on a nerve,” he said. “It’s like having really bad toothache in your b***s. I can have the growth chucked out but I should’ve gone before lockdown started.”
And last year he spoke to the Daily Star about his thyroid issues. “It’s because I don’t have a thyroid, mine was underactive which makes you fat and bald but once that goes then everything starts to grate down and you have to take lots of tablets.
“And I don’t produce testosterone now so I’m on more pills now than I was in 1988.”
