Kaine was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and grew up in Overland Park, Kansas. Kaine attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, and then Harvard Law School, where Kaine earned a Juris Doctorate before entering private practice and becoming a lecturer at the University of Richmond School of Law. Kaine first ran for public office in 1994, when Kaine was elected to the Richmond City Council. Kaine was elected mayor of Richmond in 1998 and served in that capacity until 2001 when Kaine was appointed lieutenant governor of Virginia. Virginia Governor Tim Kaine was elected in 2005 and served from 2006 to 2010. From 2009 to 2011, Kaine presided over the Democratic National Committee.
