The Mexican national accused of gunning down five neighbors in Texas had allegedly drunkenly beat his wife — who’s since been charged with helping hide the suspected mass murderer.
San Jacinto County District Attorney Todd Dillon said Francisco Oropesa, 38 – who spent four days on the lam following last week’s shooting – had been reported for savagely attacking his wife, Divimara Lamar Nava, 53, on June 14, 2022.
Nava called the sheriff’s office about her husband drunkenly beating her, records show. She told deputies that Oropesa had punched her, kicked her to the ground and pounded her head into the driveway gravel.
The attack left Nava with a broken nose and rib, a black eye, a skull fracture, and bruises on her body, according to court documents.
Although she declined to file charges against him, she sought a protective order against Oropesa, which also claimed he beat her once before about 11 years ago, Dillon said.
As part of the protective order, Oropesa was instructed to stay away from Nava and her child, to vacate the residence they shared, and to be barred from possessing a firearm or ammunition.
Records indicate that the county tried to serve Oropesa on five separate occasions, but a constable was never able to find him, Dillon said.
The case remains open, and it remains unclear if Nava ever told officials her husband had been violating the protective order.
She was arrested along with her husband after Dillion said that she was helping hide the fugitive while also cooperating with police, effectively playing both sides.
Nava is accused of helping Oropesa by “providing material aid and encouragement, food, clothes, and arranged transport” to the Conroe home police eventually found him hiding underneath a pile of laundry.
Oropesa was caught on Tuesday following an intensive manhunt that brought more than 250 law enforcement officers to comb through Cleveland, Texas, and the surrounding communities.
He is in custody at the San Jacinto County Jail and is being held on $7.5 million bond
Oropesa, who has been deported four times since 2009, is accused of gunning down his neighbors after they asked him to stop firing his gun late Friday night because of their baby was sleeping.
Police said Oropesa was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and shot the victims from the neck up, “execution-style.”
The five victims were Diana Velazquez Alvarado, 21; her son Daniel Enrique Laso, 9; Julisa Molina Rivera, 31; Jose Jonathan Casarez, 18; and Sonia Argentina Guzman, 25.
